Julia Donaldson is known for her wonderful rhymes and has done a remarkable job captivating the readers of one of her most well loved books, The Gruffalo. In this story a mouse uses his wits to scare away dangerous animals much larger than him. There is repetition that keeps you wondering what will this mouse think of next, and if there really is this creature he describes. Each time the mouse describes the Gruffalo, he scares another animal away and continues to walk “through the deep dark wood.”
The Gruffalo is a great example of how Julia Donalson’s stories engage readers with her rhymes and ability to keep you on the edge of your seat till the very last page.
Besides fun and original rhymes, Julia Donaldson tends to present a predicament her characters have to overcome. In books such as The Snail and the Whale and Room on the Broom, the characters have to be creative to get through the obstacles they’re faced with. Creativity goes hand in hand with problem solving, a skill every child can keep building upon.
Another element widely used in her books is humor! Children as well as adults will enjoy the amusing impressions throughout her books. Next time you pick a Julia Donaldson book to read, have fun reading her entertaining rhymes and stories!
