Spring has sprung and Bloom’s Author of the month is an expert on writing and illustrating children’s books that focus on spring activities and the beauty of our natural world.

Lois Elhert wrote and illustrated her first children’s book, Growing Vegetable Soup in 1987 and hasn’t looked back since. This first title begins with the planting of vegetables, continues with how they grow and ends with “It was the best soup ever.”
What a great way to teach our children about growing their own food and where vegetables come from!
Lois Ehlert uses big, bold, colorful images that are very appealing to children of all ages. When combined with her use of simple, sometimes rhyming text, her books are the perfect choice to teach children about nature.
For example, Waiting For Wings explores the life cycle of butterflies, Planting a Rainbow teaches children about planting and nurturing a garden and Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf is the story of a beautiful Maple tree’s life.
As an added bonus to these already wonderfully engaging stories, Lois Ehlert frequently includes a glossary that explains some of the more technical terms involved in learning about nature. This provides an opportunity for adults to further engage with children and continue the conversation about nature and all its wonders.
Last but not least, Lois Ehlert is the illustrator of everyone’s favorite alphabet story, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom! These and many other titles are available at our local libraries in Lake County.
